IIFT

Indian Institute of Foreign Trade MBA (International Business) Entrance Exam

Conducted by Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (last conducted by the National Testing Agency)

IIFT was the entrance test for the MBA (International Business) programme at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, last administered by the National Testing Agency. IMPORTANT: IIFT no longer conducts a separate entrance exam — from the 2024-25 admission cycle it shortlists candidates on their CAT score, followed by Group Discussion, a Written Ability Test and a Personal Interview. The pattern preserved here is the last one actually conducted: 110 questions in 120 minutes for 300 marks across Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Analysis, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning and General Awareness, with negative marking of one third of the marks the question carried. It remains useful for previous-year practice and as a demanding, GK-heavy proxy for CAT preparation.

Exam Pattern

STATUS: IIFT discontinued its own entrance exam from the 2024-25 admission cycle. MBA (IB) and MBA (Business Analytics) admissions are now made on CAT scores followed by GD, a Written Ability Test and a Personal Interview. The pattern below is the last one actually conducted and is retained for previous-year practice. IIFT (as last conducted) — 110 multiple-choice questions in a single 120-minute window, four sections carrying unequal marks: 1. Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension — 35 questions × 3 marks = 105 marks 2. Quantitative Analysis — 25 questions × 3 marks = 75 marks 3. Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning — 30 questions × 3 marks = 90 marks 4. General Awareness — 20 questions × 1.5 marks = 30 marks Total: 110 questions for 300 marks in 120 minutes. There is no sectional timing, but the exam did enforce sectional cut-offs. Marking: negative marking of one third of the marks the question carried — −1 on a 3-mark question, −0.5 on a 1.5-mark General Awareness question. The question count and the marks per question varied year to year; the figures above are from the last conducted paper. General Awareness is the section that set IIFT apart from CAT — it was static and current-affairs heavy, with a strong bias towards international trade, economics and business.

Eligibility

A bachelor's degree of minimum three years' duration from a recognised university with at least 50% aggregate marks (45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates). Final-year students may apply provisionally. There is no age limit. NOTE: admission is now made on CAT scores — check the current IIFT admission notification for the authoritative criteria.
